We are proud to bring you the Inaugural issue of itravelindonesia. The young team felt that it was time to go beyond just booking your discounted hotels and Indonesian domestic flights. So here we are.

In this Animal issue, we take a close look at my favourite destination in Indonesia, the Seminyak district in Bali. For our funky jilbabbers, Islamic fashion makes waves in London’s fashion week.

For the hordes of Indonesians flying to Singapore to shop and visit the doctors, we say there is more to Singapore than just Takashimaya and Mount Elizabeth.

Indonesians are the happiest people in the world. We look at a recent Norwegian survey that tells us that Indonesians smile more than anyone else on the Planet.

It is a modest start for us. In the next year, we will bring together articles that we hope will entertain, inform and bring you back. We hope that you will be a frequent visitor to itravelindonesia. As always, send us your feedback, kudos, and brickbats to cs@itravelindonesia.com.

Happy holidays.

Ubud Bali, Info and Guide - The Island's Preeminent Centre For Fine Arts, Dance And Music

Ubud is the cultural heart of Bali.
Travelers come to enjoy the nightly traditional dances, browse through hundreds of art galleries and fine art museums.
The rolling hills invite you to walk.
Stroll through pretty villages and verdant padi fields.

Numerous cultural sites are within easy reach. Goa Gajah,
Yeh Pulu, Pejeng, Pura Kebo Edan, and the impressive Gunung Kawi.
North of Ubud lies the springs of Tirta Empul, on the way to Batur and Kintamani.
South of Ubud lies the woodcarving centre of Mas, silver smithing town of Celuk and stone carvers of Batubulan.
Sukawati has a colorful and busy craft market. Far better than the one in Ubud itself.

Ubud's Art Museums include Museum Puri Lukisan, Neka Art Museum, ARMA and Museum Rudana.
The Dali inspired Blanco Museum is also worth a look.
ARMA is used as a practice space for Balinese dancing and gamelan.
Ubud is also the spa capital of Bali.
Popular spas include Bodyworks, Ubud Sari Health Resort and Nuris.

The "centre" of Ubud is Jalan Ubud Raya and Monkey Forest Road.
Many complain that it is now suffering from the blight of tourism!
Admittedly, the area is congested when the day-trippers roll in. By 5pm, calm is restored.
Ubud Hotels range from simple losmen to some of the most beautiful
and expensive hotels on the planet. Most hotels offer air-conditioning and a small pool.
The hotels with splash boast dramatic perches and river mountain vistas.

Already since 1930, Ubud popular among western tourists. At the time German painter, Walter Spies and Dutch painter, Rudolf Bonnet settle there. They were assisted by Cokorda Gede Agung Sukawati, Ubud's Puri Agung. Now their work can be viewed at the Museum Puri Painting, Ubud.

Ubud has a population of about 8,000 people, but it is becoming difficult to distinguish the town itself from the villages that surround it. The town was originally important as a source of medicinal herbs and plants; Ubud gets its name from the Balinese word ubad (medicine).

In the late nineteenth century, Ubud became the seat of feudal lords who owed their allegiance to the king of Gianyar, at one time the most powerful of Bali's southern states. The lords were members of the satriya family of Sukawati, and were significant supporters of the village's increasingly renowned arts scene.

Ubud is a remarkable town in the middle of the island of Bali. For more than a century, it has been the island's preeminent centre for fine arts, dance and music. While it once was a haven for scruffy backpackers, cosmic seekers, artists and bohemians, Ubud is now a hot spot for literati, glitterati, art collectors and connoisseurs. Famous names walk its busy sidewalks everyday. Elegant five star hotels and sprawling mansions now stand on its outskirts, overlooking the most prized views in Bali. Nonetheless, Ubud is still popular with backpackers, mystics and all the finest fringe elements of global society. Ubud is not "ruined". Its character is too strong to be destroyed. It still draws people who add something; people who are actively involved in art, nature, anthropology, music, dance, architecture, environmentalism, "alternative modalities," and more.

Ubud is arguably the best place to use as a base if you're visiting Bali; if you're looking for culture, comfort, nature and inspiration. Ubud is surrounded by most of the things that bring people to Bali -- scenic rice fields, small villages, art and craft communities, ancient temples, palaces, rivers, cheap accommodation and unique luxury hotels. And it's central location makes it easy to get from Ubud to the mountains, beaches, and major towns.
